Robin Williams: When laughter turns into tears

In 1991, I went to the movies with my father to watch: “Hook” with Robin Williams. I can remember crystal clear how much fun I had that day. This actor didn’t only make me laugh, but he brought joy to the whole world with his comedy movies.

However, in August 11th, all that happiness that flowed out of him turned into tears. Robin Williams was found dead, hanging in his own house, with slit wrists. After all the fame, success, money and fun, he committed suicide, leaving behind a legacy of fans that found life and fun in his movies.

Funny. Rich. Recognized. Three children. Winner of Oscars and the Golden Globe. Why kill himself? What was missing?

The most important and fundamental thing: Jesus. The way, the truth and the life.

Many times we live our lives just like him. Actors, representing who we would like to be, not who we really are. Behind our masks, we live trying to impress others, we want to be something different from who we are and we want to have something we don’t have.

Life can be fun, we can laugh at movies and with many other things. But there is still an emptiness deep inside that we keep trying to fill in order to be happy and fulfilled. We run after material and terrain things that will not fulfill us and will not complete us. These things pass, they are temporary and they end.

In the search for something that endures, lets search for Jesus.

“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him” John 3:36

The meaning of this “believes” is totally different from “I believe that is going to rain today”. Many say “I believe in God”, but in an empty way and without a life that reflects this. Believe in the Son means to have full and complete dependence on Him. Means to obey Him and what He said. Who doesn’t do this rebels against Him.

Trust in Jesus and enjoy eternal life and happiness.

Peace.
